RUNT is a play about the runts of the world: the lesser, the unwanted, the weak, those without clout, the insignificant; all the unders. Runt, a small undernourished woman has endured enough of the misery of being the runt of the litter. She toughens up and attempts to take power, to lead the oppressed, to rise up and fight, for equality, for decency and what’s right. She liberates sack after sack after sack of miserable runts. And she grows. She feels herself reaching eight foot or more. She gets a taste for what it means to be great. Trouble is, “greatness forgets runtness.”
“The perspective could have easily been dark and demoralising, but the play is vigorous and enlightening. This is undoubtedly due to Nicci Wilks’s highly energetic performance. Wilks, much like the character she portrays, is minute in stature. However, her vigour creates a fierce stage presence and allows her to command the space in an unquestionable manner.” Stage Whispers
“Runt is a complex and intelligent exploration of being at the bottom of the heap. From the heart dropping opening, Runt is everything remarkable about independent theatre in Melbourne.” Time Out
“Nicci Wilks is unrelenting in her extraordinary performance as Runt. You could put a thesaurus in a hydraulic press and still not squeeze out enough superlatives to describe the physical and emotional commitment on display. And yet, for all her histrionics and staccato-ish speech and movement you’re only ever drawn into the story she’s telling. Director Susie Dee, Wilks, and Patricia Cornelius, along with their creative team have forged a stunning piece of theatre that shouldn’t be missed.” Australian Arts Review
Four performers explore the boundaries of strength and fragility through the canvas of contemporary circus and the physical and metaphorical, egg.
